Question 1

The diagram shows the stages in the cloning process of a goat.

A flow diagram outlining the reproductive cloning of a goat. Goat A (white-faced) has an arrow pointing to Stage 1, where a somatic donor nucleus is extracted. Goat B (black-faced) has an arrow leading to Stage 2, where an unfertilised egg cell is collected. In Stage 3, the nucleus is removed from this egg cell. In Stage 4, the donor nucleus from Goat A is placed next to the enucleated egg cell. In Stage 5, they are fused together under electric stimulation. In Stage 6, the cell undergoes repeated cell division to form a multicellular embryo. In Stage 7, this embryo is transferred into the uterus of surrogate Goat C (brown-faced). In Stage 8, Goat C gives birth to the cloned kid, Goat D.

a.

Complete the table by identifying the stage number at which each event takes place.

  • Event 1: Cell division produces an embryo
  • Event 2: The embryo is implanted into a surrogate mother
  • Event 3: An egg cell is collected from a female goat
