Why plants need transport

Why plants need transport

Labelled root hair cell in soil showing osmosis of water into the cell and active transport of mineral ions, with vacuole and mitochondria labelled

Plants are multicellular, so many cells are too far from the outside environment to rely on diffusion alone. They need transport systems to move water, mineral ions such as nitrate and magnesium, and sucrose to where these substances are needed.
