Researchers recruit adults who regularly shop at a covered market. The adults are told that the study compares two shopping-list layouts. They give informed consent and are told that they may withdraw.
Each participant starts at the same market entrance and receives the same list of six products to find. For one group, the products are grouped according to their location in the market. For the other group, the products are listed alphabetically. A researcher wearing an identification badge records how long each participant takes. The study is carried out during normal opening hours.
