To study hand-washing behaviour, a psychologist installs a basin in an unused classroom. The 36 volunteers are divided into two groups. One group uses the basin with a mirror above it, while the other uses it with the mirror hidden behind a plain panel. Before each trial, the same quantity of washable paint is put on the volunteer's hands. The water temperature is fixed and the soap dispenser releases one measured dose. A sensor records the time from the tap being switched on to it being switched off.
