A clinical psychologist is investigating how adults with a mental health diagnosis manage difficult social situations. Volunteers are invited to a 45-minute audio-recorded interview. Before agreeing, each volunteer receives information describing the aim, likely topics, use of recording, possible risk of recalling upsetting experiences, and the rule that disclosures showing a risk of serious harm cannot be kept confidential. Those who choose to attend sign a consent form.
During the interview, participants select which experiences to discuss and may pass on any question. They can end the interview without giving a reason and ask for the recording and transcript to be destroyed. The interviewer is trained to work with distress and offers details of suitable support where needed. Before any quotations are reported, names, places and other identifying details are removed. The original recording is destroyed after the transcript has been checked.
