A researcher tests whether verbal encouragement affects accuracy on a symbol-matching task. All participants work for five minutes on the same 30-item sheet, and the researcher records the number of correct answers. In the encouragement condition, participants work individually in a quiet room and hear the words ‘keep going’ once every minute. In the no-encouragement condition, participants work in groups of five in a classroom where other pupils are talking, and the researcher makes no comments.
