A psychologist wants to study the effect of exam stress on memory. Sixth-form volunteers are told the study is about memory. Before a recall test, half of them are told, untruthfully, that their results will be sent to their head of year. At the start, all participants are told they can leave at any time. At the end, the psychologist explains the real aim, reveals that no results will be sent to anyone and checks that each participant is not upset. Results are recorded against code numbers and reported as group means.
