In a laboratory investigation, participants were randomly allocated to one of four conditions. Each participant heard one word list, and all four lists contained the same number of words. Two groups heard their list once and recalled the words immediately. The other two groups heard their list four times, then completed an unrelated task for 20 minutes before recall.
| Recall condition | List type | Words recalled |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate | Sound-alike words | 48% |
| Immediate | Words that did not sound alike | 82% |
| After 20 minutes | Meaning-related words | 41% |
| After 20 minutes | Words that were not meaning-related | 75% |
