A GP surgery in Leeds reviews its records. It has diagnosed far fewer men than women with depression. Very few patients over 75 have a depression diagnosis, although many of them have been treated for physical illness or recently bereaved. Patients from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds are rarely referred for talking therapy and more often first appear in services at a point of crisis.
Explain why the surgery's records may not show the true rates of depression in these three groups.
