Question 46

A researcher tests 100 seven-year-old children individually using two conservation tasks.

  • In the number task, one of two matched rows of counters is spread out.
  • In the liquid task, liquid is poured from a short, wide glass into a tall, thin glass.

Nothing is added or taken away in either task. A child passes a task only if they say the quantity is unchanged and explain their reasoning. The researcher classifies a child as able to conserve only if they pass both tasks.

Result in number taskPassed liquid taskDid not pass liquid task
Passed number task5817
Did not pass number task916

Using the results, explain one advantage and one disadvantage of requiring a child to pass both tasks before being classified as able to conserve.
