Useful, wasted, and dissipated energy transfers

Useful, wasted, and dissipated energy transfers

Sankey diagram of an electric fan showing electrical energy input splitting into useful kinetic energy of moving air and wasted thermal energy and sound

In a system, energy is transferred between stores when a device works. Total energy is conserved, so energy is not "used up" or destroyed.

Power and efficiency Lesson

  1. GCSE
  2. /Physics
  3. /Power and efficiency

Step-by-step lessons covering OCR GCSE Physics Power and efficiency for Foundation and Higher tier. Each lesson works through exam-style questions in Paper 1 and Paper 2 (Foundation Tier) or Paper 3 and Paper 4 (Higher Tier) format. Paper 2 and Paper 4 include synoptic questions that draw on Topics P1–P4, so revisit earlier topics before final exams rather than treating each paper as self-contained.
