An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is mapping a section of a deep-sea trench. It travels along a winding, non-linear path from point A A\,A to point BBB.

AUV path diagram

The AUV takes 2.5 minutes to complete the journey, covering a total path distance of 75 m. The straight-line distance from starting point A A\,A to finishing point B B\,B is 15 m.

Explain why the average speed and the magnitude of the average velocity of the AUV are different from one another.

You should include calculations in your answer.
