Figure 1 shows a vertical steel stay cable on a suspension bridge, anchored securely at the lower end M M\,M and the upper end NNN.

A mechanical disturbance at the lower anchor M M\,M initiates a transverse shear wave that propagates vertically upwards along the cable towards NNN.

Draw arrows at point P P\,P to show how the steel particles of the cable oscillate as this transverse wave passes through point PPP.
