Figure 1 shows a student using a long spring stretched out on a table to demonstrate waves. The student moves one end of the spring side-to-side, perpendicular to the length of the spring.

A horizontal spring stretched across a table. A hand at the left end is moving side-to-side perpendicular to the spring's length, creating a wave pattern with peaks and troughs traveling along the spring towards the right end which is fixed to a wall.

The waves produced on the spring are transverse waves.
