Figure 1 shows an industrial X-ray imaging system being used by an structural engineer to inspect the internal reinforcement of a concrete bridge pillar. This system allows the engineer to locate and assess the steel reinforcing bars (rebar) embedded deep inside the solid concrete without having to drill into or damage the structure.
