Question 31

An engineering laboratory compares a matt black sleeve and a shiny sleeve for metal pipes exposed to infrared radiation. In the first trials, each sleeve is fitted to a separate identical pipe section at a different position on the bench. Which change to the method would best test whether any difference in temperature rise is caused by surface finish rather than position?

[1]
A

Move both pipe sections nearer the infrared source while keeping the sleeves at two different positions.

B

Repeat each sleeve on its original pipe section at its original position, then calculate the mean temperature rise.

C

Use temperature probes with smaller scale divisions while keeping each sleeve in its original position.

D

Fit each sleeve in turn to the same pipe section at one fixed position, using the same starting temperature and heating time.
