A student investigates how the surface finish of a metal container affects the rate at which it emits infrared radiation.
The student uses a four-sided metal canister where each vertical face has a different surface finish. She fills the canister with hot water at 85degC so all surfaces start at the same temperature.
She uses an infrared radiation detector placed at a fixed distance from each surface to measure the relative intensity of emission.
