An investigator studies how different surface finishes of a metal Leslie's cube affect the rate of infrared radiation emission.

The investigator fills the cubical metal container with boiling water so that all four vertical surfaces start at the same temperature.

She places an infrared radiation detector at a fixed distance from each surface in turn to measure the relative intensity of emission. The setup for one of the surfaces is shown below.
