Question 26

A horizontal conductor is suspended from one spring and a permanent magnet is suspended from a second spring. The conductor is at right angles to the magnetic field in the gap. With the switch open, the positions of both objects are marked. When the switch is closed, the conductor deflects upwards and the magnet deflects downwards.

Explain why the conductor and the magnet deflect in opposite directions. State what happens to the directions of deflection when the current in the conductor is reversed.
