Figure 1 shows the apparatus used to investigate the transfer of gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy of a small trolley.

A wooden trolley rests at the top of an inclined wooden ramp. The trolley has a vertical card attached to its top. At the bottom of the ramp, there is a light gate connected via a wire to a digital data logger. The trolley rolls down the ramp, and the card cuts the light beam of the light gate.

The trolley is released from a fixed height at the top of the ramp. A card on the trolley cuts a light beam at the bottom of the ramp, and its speed is recorded by a data logger.

This procedure was repeated three times from the same starting position. The measured speeds are shown in the table below.
