In a manufacturing plant, a beta radiation source and a detector are used to monitor the thickness of a moving plastic film.

Diagram showing a plastic film thickness control system. A continuous sheet of plastic film moves horizontally between rollers. A radioactive beta source is positioned above the sheet, emitting radiation downwards through the plastic. A GM detector is positioned directly below the sheet to detect the transmitted radiation. The detector is connected to a digital control unit.

When the plastic film is the correct thickness, the measured count rate is 1500 counts per minute.

When the plastic film becomes thinner, the count rate increases.
