A student investigates how pressure varies with depth in different liquids.

They first carry out the investigation using pure water and plot the results on a graph, as shown in Figure 1.

A straight line of best fit starts at the origin (0,0) and rises with a constant positive gradient to a pressure of approximately 49 kPa at a depth of 5 m.

The student then repeats the investigation using a concentrated brine solution.

The concentrated brine solution is more dense than the pure water.

Compare the line on the graph for the brine solution with the line for pure water shown in Figure 1.
