Question 75

A high-speed monorail train is cruising at a constant speed. In an emergency, the train can be brought to a halt either by the driver manually activating the emergency brake lever, or by an automated trackside transponder system that transmits a microwave signal directly to the engine's receiver upon detecting an obstruction.

The braking mechanism itself provides the same constant deceleration in both cases.

Explain, in terms of the factors affecting stopping distance, why the automated system results in a shorter stopping distance than manual activation.
