Figure 1 shows a cross-section of a spherical model magnet representing a planet. Several plotting compasses are shown near its surface, with arrows representing the direction of their north-seeking poles. Figure 1: A circular cross-section representing a spherical magnet. Near the top outer surface, a compass needle arrow points vertically downwards into the sphere. Near the bottom outer surface, a compass needle arrow points vertically downwards away from the sphere. At the left and right sides, compass needles point in curved downward paths from bottom to top. The top of the sphere represents magnetic South and the bottom represents magnetic North.

Sketch, on Figure 1, the magnetic field lines both outside and inside the sphere to complete the field pattern [2].
