Figure 1 shows a laboratory apparatus used to model a planet's magnetic field. A spherical "Planetary Core Model" contains a strong vertical bar magnet with its North (NNN) and South (SSS) poles oriented as shown. Two mobile monitoring probes, Probe Alpha and Probe Beta, containing sensitive miniature magnetic compass needles, are positioned directly above and below the core respectively.
