Figure 1: A vertical spring is suspended from a clamp stand. A steel mass is hung from the bottom of the spring, with a pointer pointing to a vertical millimetre ruler. Directly below the steel mass is an electromagnet connected in series with a variable power supply and an ammeter.

Describe how the student could use this apparatus to investigate how the size of the current in the electromagnet affects the force of attraction between the electromagnet and the steel mass.
