Figure 1: An electromagnet is clamped securely to a stand. Directly below it, a block of ferromagnetic steel is placed on an electronic top-pan balance. The electromagnet is connected in series with a variable power supply and an ammeter.

Describe how the student could use this apparatus to investigate how the size of the current in the electromagnet affects the force of attraction between the electromagnet and the steel block.
