A student has the following equipment:

  • a low-voltage DC power supply
  • a thick copper wire
  • a sheet of stiff white cardboard
  • a stand and clamp
  • several small plotting compasses

Describe a method the student could use to map both the shape and the direction of the magnetic field lines around the wire when a current passes through it.

A vertical wire passes perpendicularly through a hole in the center of a horizontal piece of stiff white cardboard. The ends of the wire are connected to a low-voltage DC power supply to form a closed circuit. Several small circular plotting compasses are available to place on the cardboard surface.
