An intercom system uses a single moving-coil unit that can function either as a transmitter (microphone) or as a receiver (loudspeaker).

A cross-sectional diagram of a moving-coil unit. A flexible paper cone/diaphragm is attached to a cylindrical coil of copper wire. This coil is suspended in a radial magnetic field between the central pole and outer ring of a permanent magnet. The ends of the coil are connected to external electrical terminals.

Compare the physical principles and operation of this moving-coil unit when it is used as a transmitter (microphone) with when it is used as a receiver (loudspeaker).
