A student makes the following hypothesis:

"When the pressure of a fixed mass of gas is decreased, the volume of the gas increases."

They set up the apparatus shown in the diagram below. The nozzle of the syringe is sealed, trapping a sample of air. The student has already measured the cross-sectional area of the plunger.

A syringe of cross-sectional area A\, is clamped vertically with its sealed nozzle pointing upwards. A mass hanger is attached to the bottom of the plunger handle, allowing slotted masses to be hung. This pulls the plunger downwards, increasing the internal volume and decreasing the pressure of the trapped air inside the syringe. The syringe has volume markings printed on its side.

Devise a plan to test this hypothesis.
