Question 28
H

An engineer is choosing a spring for a trampoline.

Each spring must:

  • support forces of up to 900 N while the relationship between force and extension stays linear
  • stretch by at least 0.15 m when the force is 900 N, so that it stores enough energy to give a good bounce.

The Table shows information about three springs, X, Y and Z.

Table

SpringSpring constant in N/m\text{N/m}N/mForce at the limit of proportionality in N\text{N}N
X40001200
Y80002000
Z5000800

Evaluate which spring is the most suitable for the trampoline.

Use calculations in your answer.

Use the equation

E=12×k×x2\displaystyle E = \frac{1}{2} \times k \times x^{2}E=21×k×x2
