Question 21

A gate mechanism uses a stretchable cord. Opening the gate stretches the cord.

The force-extension relationship of the cord is a straight line through the origin up to the fully open position.

For the mechanism to work correctly, the cord must:

  • store at least 0.80 J when the gate is fully open
  • undergo elastic distortion so that it can be used repeatedly.
MeasurementValue
Length before the gate is opened0.40 m
Length when the gate is fully open0.55 m
Force when the gate is fully open12 N
Length after the stretching forces are removed0.40 m
a.

Calculate the energy stored by the cord when the gate is fully open.
