A student investigates the extension of a steel spring when different weights are suspended from it. The experimental setup is illustrated in the diagram below:

A steel spring is clamped securely to a retort stand. A pointer attached to the bottom of the spring indicates the position against a vertically mounted meter ruler. Slotted masses are suspended from the hook at the bottom of the spring.

The results of the investigation are shown in the table:
