Figure 1 shows the experimental setup used to stretch the spring.

Figure 1: On the left, a spring is suspended vertically from a clamp stand next to a vertical metre ruler, with a pointer showing the position of the unloaded spring. On the right, a mass hanger is added to stretch the spring, and the pointer indicates its new position.
