A student investigated the conservation of mechanical energy by measuring the transfer of gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy of a toy glider on an inclined track.

They used the following method:

  1. Elevate one end of a wooden track to create an inclined plane.
  2. Place a glider of mass 0.40 kg at a release point 1.2 m from the bottom of the track.
  3. Release the glider from rest and start a manual stopwatch, stopping it when the glider reaches the bottom.
  4. Calculate the average velocity, and double it to estimate the final velocity and final kinetic energy.
  5. Repeat the procedure from different release distances along the track.

State two improvements the student could make to this investigation to obtain more accurate and reliable data.
