Question 28

A skateboarder starts from rest near the top of one side of a ramp. The skateboarder does not push and rolls down the ramp and up the other side. The skateboarder then moves backwards and forwards, reaching a lower height each time, before coming to rest at the lowest point.

The skateboarder, skateboard, ramp, Earth and surrounding air are treated as a closed system.

Explain the energy changes as the skateboarder moves backwards and forwards and comes to rest.

Your answer should include:

  • the energy changes as the skateboarder moves down and up the ramp
  • why the skateboarder reaches a lower height each time
  • what happens to the total energy of the system
