The heating effect of a current

Whenever there is a current in a conductor, the conductor becomes warmer. Free electrons drift through the metal from the negative terminal of the battery towards the positive terminal, opposite to the direction of conventional current. As they drift, they collide with vibrating positive ions in the metal lattice.
