Question 20

A powered hoist raises some equipment using a cable wound around a drum. The equipment is stationary when it reaches its highest position.

The motor is then disengaged from the drum. The cable remains attached to the equipment, which descends and causes the drum to turn freely. After the equipment has gained speed, a brake is applied to the drum and brings the equipment to rest before it reaches the floor.

a.

State the energy store of the equipment that has increased because it has been raised.

[1]
b.

Explain the energy transfers that cause the equipment and drum to speed up and the brake to become warmer.

Your answer should include:

  • the descent of the equipment
  • the action of the brake
  • dissipation and conservation of energy
