Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves that can travel through a vacuum, so they do not need particles to carry them. In air or a vacuum, they all travel at about the same speed, c≈3.0×108 m/sc \approx 3.0 \times 10^{8} \, \text{m/s}c≈3.0×108m/s.
