What is red-shift?

Light from the elements in a galaxy's stars produces a pattern of wavelengths. For most distant galaxies, the whole pattern is observed at longer wavelengths than the same pattern measured in a laboratory. Each absorption line is shifted by the same fraction of its laboratory wavelength, so the pattern keeps the same relative spacing.
