EM waves and what materials do to them

Electromagnetic waves transfer energy and do not need particles to carry them, so they can travel through a vacuum. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic waves travel at about 3.0×108 m/s3.0 \times 10^{8} \, \text{m/s}3.0×108m/s, but in a material their speed can be different.
