Question 7

A technician uses two rigid levers in a workshop. Each lever is held stationary and friction is negligible.

For the lever press, the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the effort is 0.60 m. The pressing pin can be fitted at position A or position B.

Pressing-pin positionPerpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force at the pin
A0.10 m
B0.15 m

The ventilation control lever is operated by applying an effort at a perpendicular distance of 0.04 m from its pivot. A rod that opens a ventilation flap can be attached to an outer hole or an inner hole.

Rod attachmentPerpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the opposing force from the rod
Outer hole0.20 m
Inner hole0.12 m
a.

Explain why position A should be used when a larger force is needed from the pressing pin.

[2]
b.

The rod is moved from the outer hole to the inner hole. Explain how this changes the effort needed to hold the same opposing force from the rod.

[2]
c.

Give one advantage of attaching the rod to the outer hole rather than the inner hole when operating the ventilation flap.
