A metal rod rests across two parallel conducting rails and remains in contact with both rails. The rod can slide along the rails.
A constant magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane containing the rails and the rod. A resistor and a switch connect the rails at one end.
Four tests are carried out.
| Test | Motion of the rod | Switch |
|---|---|---|
| P | Stationary | Closed |
| Q | Sliding along the rails | Open |
| R | Sliding along the rails | Closed |
| S | Stationary | Open |
In which test does the resistor carry an induced current?
Test P only
Test R only
Test S only
Test Q only
