A spring inside a force meter is compressed when a force is applied. A pointer attached to the spring moves along a scale. The shorter the spring becomes, the greater the reading on the scale.
The table shows the length of the spring for different applied forces.
| Applied force in N | Length of spring in mm |
|---|---|
| 0 | 80 |
| 50 | 75 |
| 100 | 70 |
| 150 | 65 |
| 200 | 57 |
The scale has equally spaced markings from 0 N to 150 N. The manufacturer continues the same spacing beyond 150 N.
Explain whether the force meter would give a reading greater than or less than 200 N when the applied force is 200 N.
The force is removed, but the spring remains 3 mm shorter than its length at 0 N. What reading would the force meter show? Explain your answer.
