A quadratic expression has highest power 2 and is often written as:

x2+bx+c x^2 + bx + c x2+bx+c

Expanding removes brackets to create this form, and factorising puts the quadratic back into brackets.

To work accurately, you need to recognise terms, coefficients, and like terms. Like terms can be collected only if the variable and power match, which is why the two middle terms often combine after expansion.
