Question 5

Some environmental planning guidelines for a new upland commercial afforestation and peatland restoration scheme in the Scottish Southern Uplands are shown below:

  • Afforestation with non-native conifers must maintain a minimum 50-metre buffer from all watercourses to prevent upland stream acidification.
  • Deep drainage of active blanket peatlands is prohibited; existing artificial channels must be blocked to promote carbon sequestration.
  • Native broadleaf species must comprise at least 15% of the canopy cover to establish ecological corridors.
  • Timber harvesting schedules must avoid peak bird nesting seasons to protect breeding populations of raptors and black grouse.

Assess how far the commercial modification of upland ecosystems has been the main driver of UK environmental degradation.

You could consider lowland agricultural intensification, urban sprawl, and/or energy infrastructure in your response.
