| Relief rainfall | An area of dry land on the sheltered, leeward side of high hills or mountains that receives very little precipitation. | |
| Frontal rainfall | Moist air is forced to rise over high land. As it rises, it cools and condenses to form rain on the windward slopes. | |
| Convectional rainfall | → | Warm air is forced to rise rapidly after solar heating of the ground. It cools and condenses to form heavy showers. |
| Rain shadow | Warm, light air meets cold, dense air. The warmer air is forced up at a boundary, leading to condensation and prolonged rain. |
