Why visual and source skills matter

In Geography, you often answer questions using unfamiliar sources: a photograph of flooding in York, a cartoon about climate change, a map of migration routes, a graph of rainfall in Bangladesh, or an article about urban change in Lagos. The skill is not to “guess what the examiner wants”, but to treat the source as evidence.

Definition

Source

A source is any item of information you are asked to use, such as a photograph, map, graph, diagram, cartoon, table, news article, report extract or fieldwork data.

The best answers usually do three things:

  1. Use evidence from the source.
  2. Link it to geographical knowledge.
  3. Judge how useful or limited the source is.

The source analysis ladder

A helpful way to work is: observe → interpret → analyse → evaluate. Each stage goes deeper than the last.

Observe: what is actually there?

To observe means to identify visible or stated evidence without yet explaining it. In a photograph, this might include buildings, vegetation, people, vehicles, floodwater, coastal defences or land use. In a graph, it might include the highest value, lowest value, trend or anomaly.

Deconstruct

To deconstruct a source means to break it into parts so you can examine details such as content, labels, scale, date, viewpoint, symbols, language and missing information.

For a visual source, ask:

  • What can you see in the foreground, middle ground and background?
  • Are there labels, arrows, symbols or a key?
  • What is the location and scale: local, regional, national or global?
  • Is there a date, season or time period?
  • What is not shown?

Interpret: what does it suggest?

To interpret means to say what the evidence suggests. This goes beyond description.

For example, if a photograph shows standing water around homes in York, you might interpret that a local flood has disrupted transport and housing. If a cartoon shows Earth sweating under a blanket labelled “greenhouse gases”, you might interpret that it is criticising human-caused climate change.

Key Idea

Evidence first, meaning second

Do not jump straight to a big conclusion. First identify evidence in the source, then explain what that evidence suggests.

Analyse: how and why is it happening?

To analyse means to break down the pattern or issue and explain links between causes, effects, processes and places.

Good analysis uses connectives such as:

  • because
  • therefore
  • this suggests
  • as a result
  • however
  • whereas

You might link a flood photograph to heavy rainfall, impermeable urban surfaces, river overflow, floodplain development or climate change increasing the likelihood of extreme rainfall. The exact explanation depends on the source and the place.

Evaluate: how useful is the source?

To evaluate means to make a judgement about the source’s usefulness, reliability or limitations.

Definition

Reliability and bias

Reliability means how much you can trust a source. Bias means a source presents information in a one-sided way, often because of the author’s purpose, viewpoint, funding, audience or choice of evidence.

A source can be useful but still limited. A photograph may clearly show flood impacts at a local scale, but it may not show the cause of the flood, the full affected area, or whether the event is typical.

Example

Analysing a flood photograph

Imagine a photograph shows a street in York with floodwater covering the road, sandbags outside houses and a fire engine nearby.

  1. Select evidence: Floodwater covers the road and reaches the entrances of homes, so the image shows direct local impacts on housing and transport.
  2. Interpret the situation: The sandbags suggest residents expected or were responding to flooding, while the fire engine suggests emergency services were involved.
  3. Link to geography: In York, flooding is often linked to the River Ouse and periods of heavy rainfall, so the photograph could support an explanation of river flooding in an urban area.
  4. Evaluate usefulness: The photograph is useful for showing visible impacts at street level, but it does not prove the cause, show the whole flood extent, or provide data such as rainfall in mm or number of homes affected.
Common Mistake

Describing instead of analysing

A weak answer says, “There is water in the street.” A stronger answer says, “Floodwater covering the street suggests transport disruption and possible property damage, which may increase costs for residents and local authorities.”

Reading photographs, cartoons, pictures and diagrams

Photographs

Photographs are good for showing real places and visible impacts. They are often used for hazards, urban change, coasts, rivers, ecosystems and fieldwork.

But photographs are selective. The photographer chooses the angle, timing and framing. A dramatic photograph of coastal erosion at the Holderness Coast, for example, may show a collapsed cliff but not long-term erosion rates, sediment movement or the cost of defences.

When evaluating a photograph, comment on:

  • Viewpoint: aerial, ground-level, close-up or wide view.
  • Scale: one street, one settlement, one coastline or a wider region.
  • Time: one moment only, or repeated images over time.
  • Representativeness: whether it shows a typical place or an extreme example.

Cartoons

A cartoon is a simplified or exaggerated drawing used to make a point. Geography cartoons often appear in questions about climate change, development, globalisation, migration or resource use.

To interpret a cartoon, focus on:

  • labels and captions
  • symbols, such as money bags, factories, maps or animals
  • exaggeration, such as oversized politicians or tiny citizens
  • the message or viewpoint

Cartoons are useful for showing attitudes and arguments, but they are usually biased because they are designed to persuade.

Ask: Who is being criticised, what symbol shows it, and what geographical issue is being commented on?

Diagrams

A diagram is a simplified visual explanation of a process or system, such as longshore drift, a storm hydrograph, plate boundaries or the Demographic Transition Model.

Diagrams are useful because they simplify complex processes. Their limitation is that real places are messier. For example, a diagram of a destructive plate margin can show subduction clearly, but it may not show local geology, different earthquake depths or variations between countries such as Japan and Chile.

Analysing written articles

Written sources include newspaper reports, website extracts, government reports, charity campaigns, company statements and academic summaries. They can be about any scale, from a local housing development to global climate agreements.

Start with provenance

Definition

Provenance

Provenance means where a source comes from: who produced it, when, for what audience and for what purpose.

Before you trust an article, ask:

  • Who wrote or published it?
  • When was it published?
  • Is it reporting, persuading, advertising or campaigning?
  • Whose voices are included?
  • Whose voices are missing?
  • Does it use evidence, named places and data?

Recognising bias

Bias is not always obvious. A source may be biased through what it includes, what it leaves out, or the language it uses.

Look for:

  • Loaded language: “disaster”, “invasion”, “miracle”, “ruined”.
  • One-sided evidence: only one stakeholder is quoted.
  • Missing data: claims are made without figures.
  • Selective scale: focusing on a local benefit while ignoring regional or global impacts.
  • Out-of-date information: especially for fast-changing issues like population, migration or economic development.
Example

Recognising bias in an article

A local newspaper article says: “The new sea wall will save our town. Residents say the government must protect every coastline.” It quotes two shop owners but gives no cost, environmental evidence or views from nearby villages.

  1. Check provenance and purpose: A local newspaper may focus on the concerns of local residents and businesses, so its purpose may be to support protection for that town.
  2. Identify one-sided evidence: The article quotes shop owners, but not coastal engineers, environmental groups, taxpayers or people living downdrift of the sea wall.
  3. Spot missing geography: It does not mention costs, sediment movement, longshore drift, habitat damage or whether erosion may increase further along the coast.
  4. Make a judgement: The article is useful for showing local opinions, but limited for deciding coastal management because it lacks balanced evidence and wider regional impacts.

Maps, graphs and statistical techniques as sources

You may be asked why a source is useful, what problems it has, or how it could be improved. This applies to maps, graphs, statistics, photographs and diagrams.

Maps

Maps are useful for showing location, distribution and spatial pattern. A choropleth map can show life expectancy by country, while an OS map can show land use, relief and settlement patterns at a local scale.

Possible issues include:

  • missing scale, north arrow or key
  • categories that hide variation within areas
  • out-of-date data
  • unclear colours or symbols
  • distortion on world maps
  • too little detail for local decisions

Useful improvements include adding a clear title, date, source, scale, key, grid references, inset map, or a second map at a different scale.

Graphs

Graphs are useful for showing change over time, comparisons or relationships. For example, a climate graph can compare monthly rainfall and temperature, while a line graph can show population growth in a city such as Lagos.

Possible issues include:

  • axes not labelled with units
  • misleading scale
  • missing data source or date
  • too few data points
  • no line of best fit when showing correlation
  • anomalies not explained
Common Mistake

Assuming correlation proves causation

If two variables increase together, that does not automatically mean one caused the other. For example, higher GNI per capita and longer life expectancy may be related, but healthcare, education, conflict and inequality may also affect the pattern.

Statistical techniques

A statistical technique is a method used to summarise or analyse numerical data. Common examples include mean, median, range, percentage change and measures of spread.

Use statistics carefully:

  • The mean uses all values, but can be distorted by extreme values.
  • The median is the middle value, so it is useful for skewed data such as income.
  • The range shows spread, but only uses the highest and lowest values.
  • Percentage change is useful for comparing places of different sizes.

For percentage change, use:

Example

Checking percentage change

A town’s population increased from 80,000 to 100,000.

  1. Find the change: 100,000 minus 80,000 = 20,000.
  2. Compare the change with the original value: 20,000 is divided by 80,000 because 80,000 was the starting population.
  3. Convert to a percentage: 2000080000×100=25%\frac{20000}{80000} \times 100 = 25\%8000020000×100=25%, so the population increased by 25%.
Tip

Choosing a statistic

If the data includes an extreme outlier, the median is often more representative than the mean. If you want to show inequality or variation, include a measure of spread such as the range.

Suggesting improvements to sources

When asked to suggest improvements, do not just say “make it better” or “add more information”. Be specific.

Strong improvements include:

  • Use a larger sample size for fieldwork data.
  • Collect data at different times or in different seasons.
  • Add a scale, key, date and source to a map.
  • Use a more suitable graph type, such as a line graph for change over time.
  • Include multiple viewpoints in an article.
  • Compare the source with another source, such as a photograph plus rainfall data.
  • Use named, reliable sources such as the Met Office, Office for National Statistics, World Bank or local council data.
Example

Improving evidence for a coastal management decision

A council is deciding whether to build new coastal defences at a town on the Holderness Coast. It has one photograph of cliff erosion and one short article from local residents.

  1. Identify what the current sources show: The photograph shows visible erosion at one location, and the article shows local concern from residents.
  2. Identify what is missing: The evidence does not show erosion rates, longshore drift, costs, environmental impacts or the effect on places further along the coast.
  3. Suggest better evidence: Add historical maps or aerial photographs to measure cliff retreat over time, cost-benefit data, and views from residents, businesses, environmental groups and coastal engineers.
  4. Explain why this improves the decision: These sources would combine local visual evidence with longer-term data and wider stakeholder perspectives, making the judgement more balanced.
Common Mistake

One source is rarely enough

A single source may be useful, but GCSE Geography questions often reward you for recognising limits. Strong evaluation usually says what the source shows and what extra evidence would be needed.

Useful sentence starters

Try these when writing about unfamiliar sources:

  • “The source suggests this because…”
  • “Evidence for this is…”
  • “This may indicate…”
  • “However, the source is limited because…”
  • “It would be more reliable if…”
  • “A further source that would help is…”
  • “This is useful at a local/national/global scale because…”
Exam technique

In the exam

  1. Start with the source, not memory: quote or describe one precise piece of evidence before adding your own geographical knowledge.
  2. Use the command word: “describe” needs patterns, “explain” needs reasons, and “evaluate” needs a judgement about usefulness or limitations.
  3. Be specific about improvements: name the extra data, scale, date, viewpoint or method that would make the source stronger.
