A group of students is conducting fieldwork to investigate changes in channel characteristics along the course of a river.
The students planned to use a standard 50 cm ruler to measure the channel depth at regular intervals across the river. However, at their final downstream site, they found that the water depth in the middle of the channel exceeded 50 cm.
