Examine how physical processes work together in the formation of the tombolo shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Labeled geographic diagram showing the formation of a tombolo. The diagram illustrates a mainland coastline on the left and an offshore island on the right. An arrow representing the prevailing wind blows from the southwest towards the northeast. This drives waves at an angle to the coastline, with arrows showing the zig-zag movement of sand and shingle via longshore drift along the beach. An spit-like accumulation of sediment is shown growing out from the mainland towards the offshore island. Around the island, wave refraction is depicted with curved lines showing energy dissipating in the sheltered zone behind the island. This calm area of low wave energy is labeled as a zone of sediment deposition, where the spit has joined the island to the mainland, completing the tombolo. A sheltered salt marsh is labeled in the protected lee behind the tombolo.
